What does a Chiropractor do? Optimises your body for overall health and wellbeing

Living with chronic pain can affect not only your movement but also your mood, energy, and ability to enjoy life fully. At Chiropractic for Life, we understand the stress that comes with this sort of pain and work with you to resolve your immediate symptoms and help you maintain good function in the future.

A Chiropractor works to optimise your overall health and wellbeing, by adjusting the bones of the spinal column.

Patients who undergo Chiropractic treatment report benefits including:

  • Relief of spinal and joint pain
  • Relief of headaches and migraines
  • Increased range of motion
  • Decreased stiffness and muscular discomfort
  • Improved coordination and concentration
  • Increased energy levels
  • Better sleeping patterns
  • Improved Posture
  • Increased immunity
If you are ready to experience these benefits for yourself, book an appointment at one of our Chiropractic clinics in Mairangi or Red Beach

What is Chiropractic?

The purpose of Chiropractic is to optimise the overall health and well-being of a patient. Chiropractors work with the bones of the spinal column (vertebrae) and the nerves of the spinal cord. Your spine has two main functions - to provide support and allow movement and to house and protect your spinal cord.

Your nervous system (spinal cord and exiting nerves) controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in your body. Messages are transmitted from your brain, down your spinal cord, across exiting nerves to a particular body part and then back up to your brain again. It is these messages that supply vital information on how that particular body part should function.

Because our nervous system controls the functioning of all our body parts, a faulty nerve supply can result in a vast range of health conditions. Neck pain, back pain and headaches are just symptoms of usually a much deeper health problem. Some people are totally unaware that they have a subluxation because many spinal nerves do not possess the fibres that transmit pain messages. Other health conditions commonly helped by Chiropractors include colic, reflux, bedwetting, sciatica, digestive problems, skin disorders, cramps, depression, allergies, asthma, colds & flu, sleeping disorders and fatigue.
How does Chiropractic differ from Western Medicine?

Chiropractic is based on the principle that the body (if functioning optimally) is able to heal itself, therefore by detecting and correcting spinal and nerve interferences (subluxations), symptoms are often alleviated and the body's innate or inborn healing capabilities are activated. This is often a different approach to that of western medicine, whereby many medical doctors treat the symptoms of a condition, rather than focus primarily on the actual cause.

When assessing the health and wellbeing of a patient, Chiropractors tend to evaluate the entire person as a whole, rather than just focusing on a specific body region or symptom.

As the famous Thomas Edison once said – "The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease."
What is a Vertebral Subluxation?

Every now and then, your vertebrae may displace or misalign. Sometimes this is the result of a sports injury, car accident, fall or spill, pregnancy, or poor posture. Other triggers include emotional stress and chemical imbalances.

Some of these vertebrae may misalign to an extent where they actually impinge or put pressure on an exiting nerve root from your spinal cord. This impingement will interfere with the information flow across that particular nerve. This is called a Vertebral Subluxation.
What is a Chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractors are the only healthcare providers trained to locate vertebral subluxations, and by applying a precise, gentle force in a specific direction (a chiropractic adjustment), help to restore your vertebrae back to their normal functioning position, remove the subluxation, and allow your body to again function at its most optimal level.

Although most Chiropractic adjustments are applied to the spinal region, this does not mean that Chiropractors only help with neck and back complaints.

Three types of Chiropractic care

At Chiropractic for Life our experienced Chiropractors offer three types of care. We use a range of techniques for spine adjustment, and treatment is tailored to your individual needs.

Initial Intensive Care

The primary goal for this type of care is to relieve or reduce your symptoms.

In order to do this, we need to remove vertebral subluxations (areas of spinal misalignments causing compression on exiting nerves).

This phase may only take a few visits, or may last for weeks. Many factors contribute to the time-frame, such as your age, the severity of your symptoms, how long you have had the problem for, your lifestyle and your occupation.

This phase of care will help realign the spinal vertebrae to a better position, reducing nerve tension, thereby improving your overall symptoms.

Corrective Care

The goal of corrective care is to help maintain normal spinal alignment by helping to
stabilise the vertebrae, muscles and other soft tissue. This will help to reduce the risk of the original problem (or cause) from returning.

It may take months to help fully restore alignment, motion and joint function, but visit frequency is generally a lot less than needed during the initial intensive care phase. Exercises and postural advice may be needed during this phase of care.

Spinal degeneration will occur much faster in misaligned segments due to the abnormal loading and movement on the surrounding joints, therefore restoring proper alignment and function can help prevent early degenerative joint disease.
If care is stopped before the corrective care phase has been fully completed, the spine may revert back to it's 'old' position and you may risk a relapse of your symptoms.

Maintenance Care

The goal of 'maintenance' or 'wellness' care is to help maintain the current condition of your spine and keep it functioning at its maximum potential.

Periodic visits during this phase will also help detect and correct any new problems arising before they become serious. This type of care is no different than going to see the dentist to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Visit frequency will be determined by your past spinal problems, your age, occupation and lifestyle factors - but will definitely save you time and money by keeping you well.

Every person we see at Chiropractic For Life is important to us, and we will provide the best care and advice that we can, on an individual basis, to help you improve from your current condition and strive towards reaching optimal health and wellness.

We will discuss these types of Chiropractic care with you, answer all of your questions, and help you choose what type of care you need to best suit your health goals. This is entirely up to you and how you value your spinal health and wellbeing. Once obvious signs and symptoms have resolved, patients are usually given the option of receiving periodic spinal check-ups to help reduce future recurrences or the development of new problems.

Some people choose to end care at this point, others continue to receive further care to help improve their posture and strengthen their spine, and others choose an ongoing preventative/maintenance approach.
